Celebration VI: Del Rey
announce Sword of the Jedi & OT trilogies
Today's Del Rey
panel was hosted by Pablo Hidalgo (author,
The
Essential Reader's Companion) and featured
Timothy Zahn (author, Scoundrels),
Troy Denning (author, Crucible),
Shelly Shapiro (editor, Del Rey), Jennifer Heddle (editor,
LucasBooks), Drew Karpyshyn (author,
The Old
Republic: Annihilation), James Luceno
(author,
Darth
Plagueis), and Aaron Allston (author,
X:Wing - Mercy Kill). The panel had two major announcements to make: the first
is is that Christie Golden (author,
Fate of the Jedi: Ascension)
is to pen a post-Fate of
the Jedi trilogy, Sword of the Jedi,
and will feature the Sword of the Jedi herself
Jaina Solo.
The second big announcement is a new
trilogy set between Episodes IV and V called
Rebels. The first book is to be written by
new-to-Star-Wars-EU author
Martha
Wells ,
author the Raksura trilogy as well as two
Stargate: Atlantis tie-in novels, and will be told
from Leia's point-of-view. The second, written by another
new-to-Star-Wars-EU author,
Kevin Hearne ,
author of The Iron Druid Chronicles, will be told
from Luke's perspective. In other novel related news,
Timothy Zahn has penned a Lando-centric short story
prequel to his forthcoming Scoundrels
novel titled Winner Lose All and will be the first of many that will be released
in digital formats. The Q&A session that followed
revealed:
- Crucible, Troy
Denning's forthcoming post-Fate
of the Jedi novel, will be "a big adventure" with
a"huge ending";
- there are no plans to kill off the Big
Three "anytime soon";
- on the possibilty of continuing
Imperial Commando, Shapiro said, “Big maybe with
positive thoughts. Can’t say anything yet but I think
you’ll be happy.”;
- nothing to say on Paul S. Kemp's
forthcoming duology, it's "still super secret";
- when
asked whether there are any plans for same-sex
relationships, Shapiro commented that although they have
had internal discussions they didn't want to "shoehorn it
in [...] just to prove a point."

Celebration VI: Dark Horse
Comics - Look Ahead 2013 panel
Yesterday's
Dark Horse Comics' Look Ahead: 2013
panel was hosted by Pablo Hidalgo (author,
The
Essential Reader's Companion) and featured
John Jackson Miller (author,
Knight Errant), Randy
Stradley (editor, Dark Horse Comics & author,
Dark
Times), Jan Duursema (artist,
Dawn of the Jedi),
Dave Marshall (editor, Dark Horse Comics) and Doug Wheatley (artist,
Dark
Times). Announced is at least two new
Dark
Times arcs - the first will begin early next year and
will titled Fire Carrier. It
will feature Jedi Master K'Krukh, last seen in
Dark
Times' second arc
Parallels, and promises to be "intense" and
will "shake readers up". Also announced is a new
Purge story,
Tyrants Fist, whereupon Vader,
in his continuation to purge the galaxy of the Jedi, finds
himself on a primitive planet that actually reveres the
Jedi.
The Q&A session that followed discussed Brian
Wood's new Star Wars ongoing series: Stradley was
at pains to point out that the series is not a reboot and
of all the speculation surrounding the series, "nobody has
it right". The series will examine previously unasked
questions regarding this particular period in Star Wars
lore: how did Leia cope with the destruction of Alderaan?
how did Luke, who just weeks previoulsy was just a farm
boy, handle the pressure of becoming the saviour of The
Rebellion? In other discussions, Tom Taylor's
Invasion series has
"reached a satisfying stopping point", but there may be a
chance to revisit it at a later date. Similarly there are
no plans for any further
The Old Republic
comic stories, but fans should "keep their eyes open" with
regards any continuation of John Ostrander's
Legacy series.
Stradley went on to talk of a collaboration between
Dark Horse Comics and novel
publisher Del Rey on "a really
cool series" where one publisher would tell one part of
the story while the other would tell another and in the
end they would meet up. |
